Choosing the right bed size

We stock beds in 5 sizes: Single, Small Double, Double, King Size and Super King. UK bed sizes are named rather than measured, and the names are standard across the trade — so a Double mattress from any retailer fits a Double frame from any other. The measurements below are the mattress sizes those names refer to. A frame is always larger than the mattress it holds, by an amount that varies with its design, so use the frame's own dimensions on its product page when you are checking whether it fits the room.

Standard UK mattress sizes
SizeImperialMattress
Single 3ft 90 × 190 cm
Small Double 4ft 120 × 190 cm
Double 4ft6 135 × 190 cm
King Size 5ft 150 × 200 cm
Super King 6ft 180 × 200 cm

Standard sizing. The dimensions on each product page take precedence.

What a bed frame includes

A bed frame is sold on its own. The size in the title is the mattress size it takes, not the space the frame occupies — a frame is always longer and wider than that, so measure against the dimensions on the product page rather than the size name. Frames here come in single, small double, double, king size and super king. Where we stock a mattress in the size you choose, the frame's page offers it alongside. Most frames arrive flat-packed across more than one carton, so check you have every box before you start and allow room to build it in place.

Materials and finishes

Wood, linen, faux leather and velvet between them cover most of the range, with solid oak, pine and metal frames alongside. Upholstery colour is the thing photography is least reliable about: the same fabric reads differently between screens and under different light, so treat the images as a guide to the shade rather than a match to it.

Choosing a velvet bed

Velvet has a short, dense pile that catches the light, which is what gives it its depth of colour. Plain velvet has an even pile and a soft, low sheen; crushed velvet has its pile pressed in different directions, so it shimmers and changes tone as you move around it. The Malibu and Ashbourne are grey velvet, and the Casablanca is grey crushed velvet with a high foot end; the Augustina, Serenity and Millbrook are silver crushed velvet. A high foot end adds to the overall length of a bed, so check the full depth on the product page against the room rather than the mattress size alone.

Looking after velvet

Vacuum the headboard and rails regularly with a soft brush attachment, working with the direction of the pile. Blot spills straight away with a clean, dry cloth rather than rubbing, which pushes liquid into the pile and flattens it. Keep velvet out of strong direct sunlight, which fades colour over time, and follow any care label on the bed itself.

Common questions

We’re here to help

Answers to common questions about bed frames.

Ask us a question

What sizes of bed do you stock?

We stock Single, Small Double, Double, King Size and Super King. In standard UK sizing, single takes a 90 × 190 cm mattress, small double takes a 120 × 190 cm mattress, double takes a 135 × 190 cm mattress, king size takes a 150 × 200 cm mattress and super king takes a 180 × 200 cm mattress.

Do your beds come with a mattress?

No. Beds are sold as frames, and mattresses are bought separately. Each bed page states the mattress size it takes.

How will it be delivered?

Flat-packed in cartons — up to 5 cartons for the largest product here. Every product page lists its carton count and heaviest carton weight.

What materials are your bed frames made from?

Wood, linen, faux leather and velvet cover most of the range, alongside solid oak, pine and metal. Each product page states its own materials.

Do you have grey velvet bed frames?

Yes — the Malibu and Ashbourne in grey velvet, and the Casablanca in grey crushed velvet with a high foot end. All three come in double and king size.

What is the difference between velvet and crushed velvet?

Plain velvet has an even pile with a soft, low sheen. Crushed velvet has its pile pressed in different directions, so it shimmers and changes tone in the light.

How do I clean a velvet bed frame?

Vacuum it with a soft brush attachment, blot spills straight away rather than rubbing them, keep it out of strong direct sunlight, and follow any care label on the bed.
